Eighty-five litres is where a van fridge stops being a compromise: twelve of them a proper freezer, the other seventy-three a full week's shopping for two. And like the rest of the SVR line it keeps the format and front panel of the Dometic and Carbest units, so it slides into an existing cabinet — drawing 20 to 25 W in real use, which makes it the low-consumption choice at this volume.

Power and wiring

Wired straight to your 12 V or 24 V distribution box, the 85L SVR draws 20 to 25 W in real use — about 2 A on a 12 V circuit. The 48 W on the label is the compressor's maximum, reached only when it is pulling the cabinet down to temperature; the rest of the time it cycles.

Over a full day that works out at roughly 40 to 50 Ah depending on outside temperature and how often the door is opened, which a 100 Ah lithium battery and a 150 W panel cover comfortably in summer.

Need mains power? Add the 230V to 12V adapter and the fridge runs off a campsite hook-up or a garage socket while the van is parked, leaving the battery alone.

Choosing within the range

• SVR — the low-consumption model, in the same format as the Dometic and Carbest fridges it replaces
• DCR — adds separate temperature control for the fridge and the freezer
• BCD — matt black finish

On format: if you need the same volume in a taller, narrower cabinet, look at the 90 L — 97.5 cm high and only 42 cm wide.

Which side should the door open?

Stand where you will be standing when you use it. The hinges go on the far side from you, so the open door never comes between you and the fridge. In a van with the kitchen along the left-hand wall, that usually means a left-hinged door. Pick the side when you order, and the door-reversal kit is supplied with the fridge, so a later change of layout is never a dead end.

Before you cut the cabinet

Leave at least 5 cm of clearance behind and above the unit for the compressor to breathe. A fridge boxed in tight runs longer, draws more and gets loud — nearly every complaint about consumption comes down to ventilation.
