Electric Cool Box vs Fridge: Which Suits Your Campervan?

Electric Cool Box vs Fridge: Which Suits Your Campervan?

EuroVan Shop

Updated: 23 September 2026 · EuroVan Shop

In short: Electric cool box or fridge? A portable 12V cool box makes sense for weekends, a van with no furniture or a vehicle you also use daily. A built-in 12 V compressor fridge is better once you live in the van: front door, fixed wiring, a −18 °C freezer. EuroVan Shop sells built-in fridges only; see our compact camper fridges.

Electric cool box vs fridge: what is the difference?

A cool box is a portable container with a lid on top that you carry in and out of the vehicle; a built-in fridge is fixed into your furniture, opens with a front door and is wired into the van's 12 V system. Both can use a compressor, so the real difference is how you live with them, not how cold they get.

To be clear from the start: EuroVan Shop does not sell cool boxes. We sell VanCool built-in 12/24 V compressor fridges. This guide explains honestly when a cool box is the better buy, and when a built-in fridge is worth the installation.

What types of 12V cool box are there?

There are four main types of cool box, and they behave very differently on a 12 V battery.

  • Passive cool box: insulated box with ice packs, no power at all. Fine for a day out, not for a week away.
  • Thermoelectric cool box: light and simple, but it draws power for as long as it is switched on and can only cool a limited amount below the surrounding air, so it struggles in hot weather.
  • Absorption cool box: runs on gas, 12 V or 230 V and is silent, but it needs to be level and well ventilated, loses efficiency in the heat and draws a lot on 12 V.
  • Compressor cool box: works like a real fridge, is efficient on 12 V and can often freeze. It is the only portable type that competes with a built-in fridge.

So the real question for most vans is: compressor cool box or built-in compressor fridge?

Compressor cool box vs built-in 12V fridge: side by side

Criterion Portable compressor cool box Built-in 12 V compressor fridge (VanCool)
Installation None, plug into a 12 V socket Fixed in a cabinet, fused cable to the distribution box
Access Lid on top, you dig down from above Front door at cabinet height, shelves and door bins
Freezer Depends on the model Freezer compartment on every fridge; −18 °C on most
While driving Must be strapped down Fixed in the furniture; DCR models have a door lock
Use outside the van Yes, picnic, beach, second car No, it stays in the van
Space needed Floor space plus room above to open the lid A cabinet or seat box; ventilation behind the fridge
Conversion approval Not relevant, it is loose equipment CE and ECE R10, accepted for conversion approval in the UK and across Europe
Mains power Depends on the model Via our 230 V to 12 V converter (10 A / 180 W)

Both are efficient on 12 V because both use a compressor. A lid on top keeps cold air in when opened; a front door is far easier to use every day.

When does a portable cool box make sense?

A portable cool box makes sense when you do not want to, or cannot, fit furniture. It is a good choice if:

  • You go away for weekends and the van is your daily vehicle the rest of the week.
  • The van has no furniture, or you use a removable camping module.
  • You want to take the cold with you: to the beach, a festival or a friend's car.
  • You rent or borrow the vehicle and cannot drill or wire anything.

In those cases a built-in fridge is more work than it is worth. Choose a compressor model rather than a thermoelectric one if you need it to stay cold in summer.

When is a built-in 12V compressor fridge better?

A built-in 12 V compressor fridge is better as soon as the van becomes a place you live in, even for a few weeks a year.

  • Living in the van: you open the fridge dozens of times a day. A front door at worktop height beats unloading a box to reach the butter.
  • A real freezer: most VanCool models have a freezer compartment at −18 °C; the DCR line gives the fridge and the freezer their own settings.
  • Fixed installation: wired to the distribution box with a fused cable, nothing to strap down or plug in, and the DCR door lock keeps it shut on bumpy tracks.
  • Low draw: 20 to 25 W in real use on the SVR models, 25 to 30 W on the DCR models.
  • Conversion approval: CE and ECE R10, with a 2-year warranty and spare parts and support from France.

See how that draw translates into battery days in how long a 12V fridge runs on a leisure battery.

Compact built-in fridges for small vans

A built-in fridge does not need a big kitchen: the smallest VanCool models fit a seat box or a narrow under-worktop cabinet.

Model Fridge + freezer (L) H × W × D (cm) Listed draw (W) Freezer Door
VanCool 40 L 34 + 6 56.3 × 44.6 × 52.3 (with trim frame) 25 −12 °C Fixed, hinges on the right
VanCool 50 L SVR 42 + 4.5 53 × 38 × 49 22 −18 °C Reversible
VanCool 50 L DCR 36 + 6.6 52.5 × 38 × 51 30 −18 to −5 °C, own setting Reversible
VanCool 50 L BCD 40 + 10 53 × 38 × 50 30 −18 °C Reversible

Take the SVR for the lowest draw, the DCR for two independent settings, the BCD for its matt black finish and 10 L freezer, and the 40 L when only a very small recess is free. Keep space behind for ventilation: at least 10 cm on the DCR models.

Dual zone: fridge and freezer each on its own setting. Fits a seat box.

VanCool 40 L

VanCool 40 L

The most compact: 51 × 39 cm on the face without the trim frame.

Need more freezer space? The 70 L drawer unit

If a freezer compartment is not enough, the VanCool 70 L is a drawer-style compressor unit that works as a freezer down to −18 °C or as a second fridge. It holds 68 L net across two drawers, so everything is in front of you, with no bending over a chest lid.

It measures 75 × 43 × 54 cm and draws about 25 to 30 W on average. Pair it with a compact fridge for full-time living, or browse our fridge-freezers.

VanCool 50 L BCD

VanCool 50 L BCD

40 L fridge + 10 L freezer at −18 °C, matt black finish.

Do electric cool boxes use a lot of electricity?

It depends on the type. A thermoelectric cool box draws power for as long as it is switched on, so it can empty a leisure battery quickly. A compressor cool box, like a compressor fridge, only draws while the compressor runs, then pauses once cold.

For comparison, VanCool fridges are listed at 22 to 35 W for most models, about 2 to 3 A on 12 V while running. Every model is native 12/24 V and runs on 230 V only through our 230 V to 12 V converter.

Frequently asked questions

Are electric cool boxes worth it?

For weekends, day trips or a van without furniture, yes, especially a compressor model. If you live in the van or want a real freezer and front access, a built-in 12 V compressor fridge is the better long-term choice.

Can you leave an electric cool box on all the time?

A compressor cool box or fridge can run continuously, because the compressor pauses once it is cold. A thermoelectric cool box draws power the whole time, so leaving it on can drain a leisure battery.

Does EuroVan Shop sell cool boxes?

No. We only sell VanCool built-in 12/24 V compressor fridges and a 70 L drawer freezer, designed to be fixed into van, motorhome and caravan furniture.

What is the smallest built-in fridge for a small van?

The VanCool 40 L measures 51 x 39 cm on the face without its trim frame. The 50 L SVR, DCR and BCD models are 38 cm wide; the DCR and BCD are made to fit a seat box.

Is a compressor cool box better than an absorption cool box?

On 12 V, a compressor is generally more efficient and keeps working in the heat and on uneven ground. An absorption box can run on gas and is silent, but it must be level and loses efficiency in hot weather.
