In short: How long a 12V fridge runs on a battery depends on its draw and how often the compressor runs. Most VanCool fridges are listed at 22 to 30 W, about 2 to 2.5 A on 12 V: roughly 20 to 60 Ah a day. On a 100 Ah lithium battery with no charging, that is an estimated 1.5 to 4 days. Compare every model in our camper fridge range.
See all 12V compressor fridgesHow long will a 12V fridge run on a leisure battery?
A 12 V compressor fridge typically runs for about 1.5 to 4 days on a 100 Ah lithium battery with no charging at all. That range is an estimate, not a promise: it assumes a fridge listed at 22 to 30 W, about 90 Ah of usable capacity, and no other appliances on the battery.
The answer moves a lot with three things: how many hours a day the compressor actually runs, how big your battery really is, and whether anything puts energy back in (solar, alternator charging or a campsite hook-up). With a charging source, a well-sized system keeps the fridge running indefinitely.
12V fridge power consumption: watts, amps and amp-hours
Fridge power consumption is easiest to read in three steps: watts (W) tell you the draw, amps (A) tell you the current on your 12 V circuit, and amp-hours (Ah) tell you how much of your battery a day costs.
- Amps = watts ÷ volts. A fridge drawing 25 W on 12 V pulls about 25 ÷ 12 ≈ 2.1 A while the compressor runs.
- Ah per day = amps × hours running. At 2.1 A, 12 hours of compressor running is about 25 Ah; 24 hours is about 50 Ah.
- Label maximum vs real use. The higher figure on the label (for example 40 W on the VanCool 50 L SVR, 70 W on the 90 L DCR) is the compressor's maximum, reached while it pulls a warm cabinet down to temperature. Once cold, the draw drops to the figures in the table below.
On a 24 V system the same fridge draws half the current, so the Ah figures halve too; the energy used (Wh) is the same.
How much power does each VanCool fridge use?
The table uses the consumption listed for each VanCool model and two example scenarios. Assumptions: 12 V circuit; “100%” means the compressor runs at the listed figure all day, a prudent upper estimate close to the daily figures on our product pages; “50%” is an example where the compressor runs half the time. Real results depend on temperature, ventilation and use.
| Model | Fridge + freezer (L) | Listed draw (W) | Amps at 12 V | Ah/day at 100% | Ah/day at 50% (example) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| VanCool 40 L | 34 + 6 | 25 | 2.1 | 50 | 25 |

| VanCool 85 L BCD | 77 + 8 | 35 | 2.9 | 70 | 35 |
| VanCool 90 L DCR | 74 + 16 | 30 | 2.5 | 60 | 30 |
| VanCool 105 L DCR | 82 + 22 | 30 | 2.5 | 60 | 30 |
| VanCool 140 L | 112 + 28 | 30 | 2.5 | 60 | 30 |
| VanCool 150 L Slim | 135 + 15 | 45 | 3.8 | 90 | 45 |
| VanCool 170 L | 112 + 58 | 30 | 2.5 | 60 | 30 |
| VanCool 70 L drawer freezer | 68 (fridge or freezer) | 30 | 2.5 | 60 | 30 |
The two SVR models are the low-consumption choice of the range: 20 to 25 W in real use.
What decides how long the compressor runs?
The compressor's running time, often called the duty cycle, decides your real consumption far more than the size of the fridge. A compressor fridge switches on when the cabinet warms up and off when it reaches the set temperature, so anything that brings heat in makes it run longer.
- Ambient temperature: a van parked in summer sun is much warmer than the air outside. The hotter the van, the longer each cycle.
- Ventilation: the compressor must get rid of heat. Our DCR pages ask for at least 10 cm of free space behind the fridge with ventilation grilles; the 140 L and 170 L need 59 mm behind, or an exterior vent grille opposite the cooling unit. A boxed-in compressor works harder and cools less well.
- Door openings and warm food: every opening lets cold air out, and a bag of warm shopping takes a long pull-down.
- Thermostat and freezer: a −18 °C freezer costs more than a compartment left warmer. Set what you need, not the coldest setting.
Will a 12V fridge drain my leisure battery?
A 12 V fridge will drain your leisure battery only if it uses more energy each day than your charging puts back. On its own, a fridge is usually the largest continuous load in a van, so it is the appliance that sets your autonomy.
| Battery (example) | Usable capacity (assumption) | Days at 44 to 60 Ah/day | Days at 22 to 30 Ah/day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 Ah AGM / lead-acid | about 50 Ah | about 1 | about 2 |
| 100 Ah lithium | about 90 Ah | 1.5 to 2 | 3 to 4 |
| 200 Ah lithium | about 180 Ah | 3 to 4 | 6 to 8 |
These are estimates with no charging and nothing else on the battery. Lead-acid and AGM batteries are generally not discharged much below half; lithium batteries allow deeper use. For the 140 L and 170 L we recommend 100 Ah as a minimum, and 200 Ah if the van also runs other equipment. The DCR fridges add a low-voltage protection that stops the compressor before the leisure battery is drained.
Can a solar panel keep a 12V fridge running?
Yes, in good weather a roof panel can cover a compressor fridge's daily use, but output varies so much with season and location that you should treat every figure as a rough estimate.
A simple way to estimate: panel watts × hours of equivalent full sun ÷ 12 V. For example, a 200 W panel with 4 hours of good summer sun gives about 800 Wh, or roughly 65 Ah before losses: more than a VanCool fridge uses in our table. On a grey winter day the same panel might give only a fraction of that. For the 85 L SVR, a 100 Ah lithium battery and a 150 W panel cover it comfortably in summer.
Charging from the alternator while you drive also refills the battery; on short trips in winter it is often the most reliable source.
Running a 12V fridge on 230 V hook-up
Every VanCool fridge is native 12/24 V, so it runs straight from the leisure battery without an inverter, and it does not run on 230 V directly. On a campsite hook-up or at home, you plug it in through our 230 V to 12 V converter (10 A / 180 W). The fridge then leaves the battery alone.
The converter comes with a 12 V 1/2/OFF selector switch: when the fridge is wired to both the battery and the converter, it draws from only one source at a time.

How to make your battery last longer
The cheapest way to gain autonomy is to help the compressor run less.
- Pre-cool the fridge on hook-up or while driving before a stay off-grid.
- Load food that is already cold, and keep the fridge reasonably full.
- Open the door briefly and plan what you take out.
- Keep the ventilation grilles clear and the space behind the fridge free.
- On the DCR models, use turbo only after shopping and night mode to switch the display off.
- Park in the shade when you can.

How long will a 12V fridge last on a 100Ah battery?
As an estimate, a VanCool fridge listed at 22 to 30 W runs about 1.5 to 4 days on a 100 Ah lithium battery with no charging, and about 1 to 2 days on a 100 Ah AGM battery. It depends on how often the compressor runs.
How many amps does a 12V compressor fridge draw?
Divide the watts by 12. A 25 W fridge draws about 2.1 A while the compressor runs, and a 30 W fridge about 2.5 A. The label maximum is only reached while pulling a warm cabinet down to temperature.
Will a 200W solar panel run a 12V fridge?
On a sunny summer day, often yes: 200 W with about 4 hours of good sun gives roughly 65 Ah before losses, more than our fridges use. In winter or bad weather it can be far less, so plan a battery reserve or alternator charging.
Can I run a VanCool fridge on 230 V?
Not directly. They are native 12/24 V fridges. On a campsite socket, use our 230 V to 12 V converter (10 A / 180 W), which includes a selector switch so the fridge draws from one source at a time.
Does a 24 V system use less power?
It draws half the current, so the amp-hour figures halve, but the energy used in watt-hours stays the same. All VanCool fridges run on 12 V and 24 V.
