Motorhome fridge replacement: why swap a 3-way fridge for 12 V?

Because a compressor fridge runs efficiently from the leisure battery, so you no longer depend on gas or hook-up to keep food cold. Many used motorhomes and caravans come with a three-way absorption fridge that runs on gas, 12 V or 230 V. It is silent, but it needs to stand level, it cools less well in hot weather, and on 12 V it is usually only practical while driving.

A 12 V compressor fridge removes those limits: no gas to manage, no levelling, and it holds its temperature in the heat. Pair it with solar panels and you can stay off-grid for days. The SVR keeps the same footprint and front panel as the Dometic compressor fridges it replaces, so it drops into the existing cabinet without recutting. Compare replacement fridges

Step 1: how do you measure the fridge cabinet?

Measure the recess itself, not the old fridge door: height, width and depth, each at two or three points, and keep the smallest figure. Old furniture is rarely perfectly square.

• Model number first: if the old fridge is still in place, note the model from its rating plate. If it is a Dometic RC 10.4 or a Thetford T2090, the 90 L RCN and 90 L DCR are made for that format.
• Height: the 140 L and 170 L have removable feet, which saves 3 cm and 5 cm. That is often what decides whether they fit.
• Depth: add the ventilation space the model needs behind it (see step 2).
• Door side: put the hinges on the far side from where you stand. All the models in the table have a reversible door.

Step 2: does a compressor fridge need ventilation too?

Yes. The compressor releases heat behind the fridge, and that warm air needs a way out. Boxed in with no outlet, it works harder and cools less well. Clearances given for VanCool fridges:

• DCR range (including the 90 L DCR): at least 10 cm of free space behind, with ventilation grilles.
• 85 L SVR: at least 5 cm behind and above.
• 140 L and 170 L: 10 mm above, 5 mm on each side and 59 mm behind, with the bottom never fully blocked. If you cannot free 59 mm at the back, an exterior vent grille on the body, opposite the cooling unit, lets the heat leave straight outside.

A three-way fridge already sits behind exterior vent grilles for its cooling fins. When the new fridge's cooling unit ends up opposite them, they can do the same job for the compressor.

Step 3: who should disconnect the gas supply?

A qualified gas engineer, not you. Removing a three-way fridge means disconnecting its gas supply, and the pipe must then be capped and the whole installation tested for leaks. That is work for a qualified professional.

• Keep the gas cylinder closed until the work is done.
• Ask the engineer to cap the fridge supply and check the rest of the installation (hob, heater, water heater) still works safely.
• Ask what to do with the old fridge's flue opening in the wall.
• Keep the invoice or certificate: it is useful at the next habitation service, for insurance and when you sell.

Once the gas is safely capped, the old fridge can come out and the new one goes in without any gas connection at all.

Step 4: how do you wire the new fridge to 12 V?

Wire it to the leisure battery with a fused cable from the distribution box. VanCool fridges are native 12/24 V, so there is no inverter. Before connecting, check where the old 12 V feed comes from: on many motorhomes and caravans the three-way fridge's 12 V supply only works while the engine runs or the car is attached. A compressor fridge needs a permanent supply from the leisure battery.

• Follow the cable size and fuse given in the fridge's manual, or have an auto electrician check the circuit.
• The DCR models have a low-voltage protection that stops the compressor before the leisure battery is drained.
• After delivery, let the fridge stand upright for 2 to 4 hours before switching it on, so the refrigerant settles. A DCR fridge then takes 2 to 3 hours to reach temperature.

Step 5: how do you run it on 230 V hook-up?

Through a 230 V to 12 V converter. VanCool fridges do not plug into 230 V directly: that is what keeps them efficient on a battery. Our converter delivers 10 A / 180 W, which matches the whole range, and has over-voltage, over-current and short-circuit protection.

It comes with an EU mains cable, a cigarette lighter plug to connect to the fridge's wiring, and a 12 V 1/2/OFF selector switch. With that switch the fridge stays wired to the leisure battery and to the converter, but only ever draws from one source at a time. On hook-up, the battery is left alone.

How much battery does a replacement fridge need?

For the large 140 L and 170 L, plan on a 100 Ah battery as a minimum, and 200 Ah if the vehicle also runs other equipment. Real-use figures from the product pages:

The estimates are simple arithmetic on the average wattage: 30 W × 24 h = 720 Wh, divided by 12 V = 60 Ah. Heat, door opening and how full the fridge is all change the real figure. For the 85 L SVR, a 100 Ah lithium battery and a 150 W solar panel cover it comfortably in summer.
